Describe the Work
Start with what needs fixing, where it is and when the problem began. Photos can help explain a leak, damaged surface or area you want changed. For a larger project, separate the work you need from the additions you would like if the budget allows.
Compare the Same Scope
Ask each business to quote the same work. A useful estimate spells out the labor, materials, preparation, cleanup and timing. If one price is much lower, find out what it leaves out before deciding. Keep the estimate and any agreed changes in writing.
Check the Details
For contractor work, use the California Contractors State License Board’s license lookup to check the business you are considering. Confirm who will do the work, how scheduling is handled and whom to contact if plans change. Agree on access to the property and any preparations needed before the crew arrives.
